In Part 1 of this series, we discussed the dangers of operating computers without electrical power protection, both from outages and from surges which can be harmful to your equipment.  Now, in Part 2 we will discuss what you should actually do to protect yourself.

Since most businesses maintain at least one server which stores critical files, protecting your server is the most important consideration when it comes to power outages and surges.  That’s why when we install a new server, we include setting up an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) as part of the scope of work.  Most of the UPS’s we deploy are made by American Power Conversion (APC), the most significant player in the UPS marketplace, and we prefer to use them because of their proven track record for reliability.

With backups being so important to your business, we're offering you a backup quiz! Ready?

 

Q. How many backup tapes should you be using in your backup plan?

A. Ideally, twenty-two.
      · 12 tapes for monthly backups, used the last day of the month
      ·  5 "Friday" tapes for weekly backups, used every Friday
      ·  4 weekday tapes, used Monday through Thursday
      ·  1 cleaning tape, used every week

You can get by with a few less, if you don’t want or need a full year of monthly backups.  Other tape plans can be utilized, depending on your specific needs.

Q. How many people should be involved in your backup plan?

A. We recommend at least two, if possible. Daily tasks are to verify the backup is complete, change the tape, and take the tape off-site. (Remember to have alternates selected in case someone is unavailable).

Q. What information should the backup data include?
