Sure, I’ve got power protection for my PC.  In fact, I picked up one of those fancy computer strips from my local office supply store and paid over ten bucks for it!

But can I afford to wait until my electricity spikes or goes out before I find out if I’m really protected?  What could happen to my computer on any stormy afternoon?

In truth, the cheap power strips I can pick up from office supply or computer stores usually don’t give me much protection.  The good ones might stop one power surge.  After the power strip stops the first one, they’re not likely to stop any more surges.  And most of the time people don’t know if they are effective any longer, but they just keep using them.

Ask The Expert:  What Is Microsoft Software Assurance?

In our last edition, I discussed the Microsoft licensing options available to small businesses. When choosing one of the Volume Licensing options, Microsoft also offers Software Assurance (SA) to be purchased with the licenses. What is Software Assurance, you ask? Software Assurance is a range of

additional benefits provided by Microsoft to allow business to get the most from Microsoft software.

The best known benefit to Software Assurance is new version rights. These rights allow a company to upgrade to the latest and greatest version of the Microsoft product that was purchased at no additional cost. For example, Microsoft releases a new version of the Office Suite every 2.5 to 3 years. If you purchase software assurance with your Microsoft Office licenses, and if Microsoft releases a new version while your benefits are in good standing, you are eligible for a free upgrade to the new version.
