Let Favicons Capture Your Logo For Website Presence
by Sheila Finnerty

Have you noticed that some websites have an icon or a logo in the address bar of their website? One, for example, is the website Google.com, which has the "G" icon:

These are called favicons (pronounced fav-icons) and they are also known as "website icons" or  "bookmark icons".  A favicon is a visual shortcut to your website or a mini-logo.  Depending on your web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.) the favicon will be seen:

  1. In your address bar:

2. On your list of favorites or bookmarked pages (only if the user       bookmarks the page):

  3. Next to a page title in web browsers using tabbed browsing:

  4. In your Internet history folder:

Users can also drag and drop the favicon onto their desktop and later use it as a shortcut to your website.

Adding a favicon to your site will:

  • make your site stand out from the rest
  • increase your credibility
  • help to brand your on-line presence

Since your favicon needs to capture your brand and company visually, you should start with your logo.  If your logo is complex or detailed, you may have a problem reducing it to the size of a favicon.  If this is the case, start with the initial letter from your company name and add a small representative image.

Just remember, your favicon is your brand presence and it appears on valuable, but tiny on-line real estate.  Make sure it stands out, and matches your logo and website well.
