How Do Computers become Infected with Viruses Even When Anti-virus Software is Installed?

by Sara Wittenberger

There are a number of explanations detailing why a computer that is "fully- protected" can become infected. Based on the fact that there is not a universal anti-virus software available, consumers are choosing between Symantec, who owns Norton Anti-Virus, Trend Micro and McAfee computer security systems.

Often times, PCs already come preloaded with a McAfee security suite, yet some users will install a Norton program, thereby creating confusion amongst the system as the two systems run simultaneously. This confusion causes the anti-virus or firewall programs to attack and cancel each other out, allowing viruses to make their way into the system unbeknownst to the user. Make sure that if you install a new security system on your PC that any previous anti-virus or firewall suites are removed first.

Aside from that, the constant stream of new viruses being created on a daily basis forces a PC user to be vigilant about keeping their security suite programs updated. Updates are akin to daily vitamins for humans, allowing them to ward off any potential threats. However, any FUD viruses or "Fully Undetectable" can still infect the PC because the security program does not recognize that it is a threat. Security programs are always one step behind due to the fact that the virus has to be created before a program or update can be made available to eliminate it. But if your software is kept up to date, it's easier to avoid this problem.

Along with being careful about updates, use a higher standard of care when opening email attachments from unknown sources and visiting potentially harmful websites. The viruses that can come from those sources are fully capable of disarming your security system and opening the floodgates to more problems.

In order to avoid this problem, use caution on your PC, update your security suites and try to perform a virus scan on your computer once a week.
